Weekend Roundup

Tera Hunter
  • "Has the United States ever defaulted on its debt? Yes. It did so in 1790 and in 1933 as well." Over at the Historical Society, Randall Stephens writes about "Life and Debt in the US."
  • In a New York Times op-ed, historian Tera Hunter (Princeton) discusses the controversial statement about slave families included in the socially conservative pledge "The Marriage Vow."
The Weekend Roundup is a weekly feature compiled by all the Legal History bloggers.

  1. Slight correction: on the first link it should be "Stephens" rather than "Stephen."

  2. Re: the Hunter article. She cites the so-called "marriage vow" as claiming that the period of slavery was "idyllic" for American families without quoting the whole clause.

I'd note that the actual word from the part she was omitted was "Disastrous." So, that's different.

Change those two words and the whole premise of her NYT op-ed (that the pledge is some sort of plot to restore an idyllic view of slave life) falls apart.
