The Journal of Legal History is a thriving legal history journal, with a primary focus on the legal history of the British Isles and the British Empire. The Journal is expanding its editorial team and wishes to appoint a Co-Editor, an Assistant Editor and a Reviews Editor, to be in post by early 2027. Descriptions of the roles are set out below. All candidates should have expertise in the fields of legal history within the scope of the Journal. The roles are not remunerated.
Anyone interested in applying should send a CV (no more than four pages) and a covering letter to the editor of the Journal, Ian Williams: ian.williams@sjc.ox.ac.uk.
Co-Editor. The Co-Editor will work with the current Editor in all aspects of the Journal’s work. The primary activity will be the initial review of submissions to the Journal, followed by the management of the peer review, editing and publication process for submissions, using the publisher’s systems. The co-editors will also be responsible for developing the profile of the Journal and encouraging submissions, as well as being the point of contact with the publisher of the Journal. It is expected that the Co-Editor will have prior editorial experience, either for books or a journal.
Assistant Editor. The Assistant Editor will work with the co-editors in the initial review of submissions to the Journal and be involved with the management of the peer review, editing and publication process for submissions, using the publisher’s systems. It is envisaged that the Assistant Editor will be at an earlier career stage than the co-editors, with the hope that the Assistant Editor will be able to move to a Co-Editor role when one falls vacant.
Reviews Editor. The Reviews Editor will have primary responsibility for commissioning and editing publications for the Journal which are not original academic research. The Journal currently publishes book reviews as well as an annual Migration of Manuscripts and a report from the Scottish Legal History Group. In addition to these established formats, the Journal hopes to publish an annual bibliography of research in the legal history of the British Isles and the British empire, for which the Reviews Editor
would be responsible. It will be open to the Reviews Editor to propose further types of publication for inclusion in the Journal. The decision on whether to take such proposals forward will be made by the editorial team as a whole
