Willliam S. McFeely (1930-2019)

William S. McFeely (1930-2019) has died.  A graduate of Amherst and Yale, where his Ph.D. was in American Studies, he taught at Mount Holyoke College and the University of Georgia, where he was the Abraham Baldwin Professor of the Humanities. His published works include the booksYankee Stepfather: General O.O. Howard and the Freedmen (1968); Grant: A Biography (1981); Frederick Douglass (1990); Sapelo's People: A Long Walk into Freedom (1994); Proximity to Death (2000); Portrait: The Life of Thomas Eakins (2007), all published by W.W. Norton.  Grant won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 1982.  Here is McFeely on something he learned from Edmund Morgan.
