We are pleased to announce that Felice Batlan will be joining us for the month of February. Professor Batlan is Associate Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Institute for Law and the Humanities at IIT-Chicago-Kent College of Law.
Her path to legal history is a fascinating one: after earning her JD from Harvard Law School, Professor Batlan spent nine years in private practice, eventually becoming head of global compliance and associate general counsel at Greenwich Capital Markets. She then returned to school and earned a Ph.D. in history from New York University. With this unique background, Professor Batlan has served as an adviser to the Security & Exchange Commission historical society and assembled a truly unusual teaching package (corporate law, securities regulation, legal history, and feminist legal theory).
We know her best because of her important work on feminist legal history, women lawyers, sociological jurisprudence, and legal aid. Her most recent publications include "The Birth of Legal Aid: Gender Ideologies, Women, and the Bar in New York City, 1863-1910," Law and History Review (2010) and "Notes from the Margins: Florence Kelley and the Making of Sociological Jurisprudence," in Dan Hamilton and Alfred Brophy eds., Transformations in American Legal History, Vol. II (2010). We are looking forward to hearing more about her current projects. Welcome, Felice Batlan!
