cholar of ethnic studies. He was seventy years old, and a Professor Emeritus of Asian American Studies at U.C. Berkeley. I first encountered him through Strangers From a Different Shore: A History of Asian Americans (1989). Takaki wrote or edited over twenty books, including Iron Cages: Race and Culture in 19th Century America (1979), A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America (1993) and Double Victory: A Multicultural History of America in World War II (2000).
