Ronald Takaki has died

I am very sorry to report the death this week of Ronald Takaki, a pioneering scholar of ethnic studies. He was seventy years old, and a Professor Emeritus of Asian American Studies at U.C. Berkeley.

His life and contributions are discussed in AsianWeek, which plans a series of articles in tribute to Takaki.

Thanks, Mary, for this sad news. This is a big loss for us all.

I'm more familiar with Takaki's outstanding first book, A Pro-Slavery Crusade and a little bit with his book on plantation life in Hawaii. Those two gems are sometimes overlooked when people focus on Takaki's synthetic work on race in America. It's exciting how scholars shift their writing interests, isn't it?
