I'm starting to read Professor Chris Wickham's book, The Inheritance of Rome: Illuminating the Dark Ages, 400-1000.
Reviews of the book appear in, among other places:
The Telegraph
The Literary Review
The Guardian
The New Yorker

Wickham's latest book is a continuation of sorts of his thousand page masterpiece "Framing the early Middle Ages: Europe and the Mediterranean 400–800." Framing the early Middle Ages is a necessary read for anyone interested in the early medieval world-- particularly those interested in economic history- and I recommend reading it in tandem with this latest publication.
