Conference on Law and Memory at USC

USC Center for Law, History and Culture
Tenth Anniversary Conference
Law and Memory
February 25 & 26, 2011
Location:  USC Law School

The University of Southern California Center for Law, History and Culture is pleased to announce our Tenth Anniversary Event: A Conference on Law and Memory, to be held at the USC Gould School of Law on February 25‐26, 2011. This event, which is open to the public, will bring together scholars of law, history, psychology, literature, communications and cultural studies to discuss the myriad ways individuals and societies remember – and forget – the past through law. While scholarship on history and memory has exploded in recent years, and much of it has centered on the role of trials and other legal processes in shaping collective memory, only recently has work in the new field of law and humanities begun to explore the intersections of law and memory more self‐consciously. As a tribute to our center’s work in nurturing this new field, many leading figures in Law and Humanities will join us in February for the Conference on Law and Memory. The program will include a keynote address by Robert Gordon of Yale and Stanford Law Schools on History, Memory, and the Constitution; a plenary session with Elaine Scarry of Harvard University and Paul St. Amour of the University of Pennsylvania on Social Contract and Law’s Memory; and a Roundtable on Law and the Memory of Slavery, including Annette Gordon‐Reed of Harvard Law School and Cheryl Harris of UCLA School of Law. The preliminary schedule appears below. The event is open to the public. Registration is $10 ($5 for students) and includes continental breakfasts and lunches. To register, please contact Mira Dalpe by email,  or 213‐821‐1239.
